　日本語の敬語の歴史的変遷を概観すると、最も大きな変化は絶対敬語から相対敬語への移行であるとするのが一般的な意見であるが、これまでその過程、時期については明らかにされてこなかった。本書は、その過程を明らかにしたものである。日本語の敬語をどの言語にも存在する待遇表現の一面と捉え、日本語の複雑な待遇表現を、社会言語学の視点から、海外の日本文学研究者や言語学者に紹介するために、和泉書院から出版した『第三者待遇表現史の研究』を英訳し、さらに日本語の敬語について概説を加筆したものである。

　This book examines the history of honorific expression in the Japanese language, focusing on referent-oriented honorifics. This is the first Japanese book to investigate the shift of honorifics from the viewpoint of sociolinguistics. I targeted the following people as potential readers of the book: scholars interested in Japanese literature and linguists who are interested in honorifics or polite expression in general.
