題目(講演は日本語です)
Word Learning and Problems of Induction
Word learning is typically viewed as an inductive process, and the
learner's goal is to acquire the correct mapping between word and world.
As
some philosophers such as Quine have pointed out, the problem is that
there
are infinitely many logically possible generalizations that the learner
can
make in a given case, and many researchers have posited some fast mapping
mechanisms specific to word learning that help the learner narrow down the
referential possibilities. However, recent studies on the learning of
personal pronouns suggest that children do not need any fast mapping
mechanisms to learn word meaning. Rather, what they need are situations
in
which they can induce the correct semantic rules from regularities present
in input. Children's successful induction of the semantic rules and the
generalization to unfamiliar instances are based on their abilities to
understand the speaker's intention, to extract relevant information from
child-directed, as well as overheard, speech, and to use the relevant KIND
information about the referents. In my talk, I will present evidence from
experimental, observational, and computer simulation studies in support of
this view.
