As some philosophers such as Quine have pointed out, the problem is that there are infinitely many logically possible generalizations that the learner can make in a given case, and many researchers have posited some fast mapping mechanisms specific to word learning that help the learner narrow down the referential possibilities. However, recent studies on the learning of personal pronouns suggest that children do not need any fast mapping mechanisms to learn word meaning. Rather, what they need are situations in which they can induce the correct semantic rules from regularities present in input. Children's successful induction of the semantic rules and the generalization to unfamiliar instances are based on their abilities to understand the speaker's intention, to extract relevant information from child-directed, as well as overheard, speech, and to use the relevant KIND information about the referents. In my talk, I will present evidence from experimental, observational, and computer simulation studies in support of this view. ================================================================ 問い合わせ先 椎名乾平 早稲田大学教育学部教育心理学室 Email:shiina@mn.waseda.ac.jp
