 The 9th International Conference of EAJS at Helsinki Lahti (Finland)

The 9th international conference of the European Association for
Japanese Studies (EAJS - http://www.eajs.org) will be held from August 
22 to August 26, 2000 at the University of Helsinki Lahti Research and
 Training Centre.

             Section of Linguistics and Language Teaching
        SEMANTIC AND COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE

Language structure is a composite of cognitive and social communicative 
strategies. Cognitive semantics, the latest of the major trends which 
have dominated the second half of the 20th century, attempts therefore to 
preserve insights from non-formal semantic traditions. Besides (formal 
and non-formal) lexical and grammatical semantics, this new paradigm 
re-opens, also for Japanese Linguistics, detailed discussion of the 
language functions, dialogue memory and context (perception), 
categorization, semantic transfer, deaf sign language, meaning as 
cultural and historical conditions that motivate literate practices etc.

++SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Abstracts (with a title at the top), on one side of a single page (A4 
letter size) should not be longer than 500 words including examples. 
Leave a 2.5 cm margin on all sides. An additional page may be included 
with references only.

We strongly encourage submission by e-mail. Please use the subject header 
"Abstract for EAJS Conference 2000 - Finland", and include all the author 
information in the body of the e-mail.

If possible, please use plain ascii text. Plain text abstracts should be 
sent in the body of the e-mail, following the author information. 
Acceptable formats are (in a descending order of preference):

               1. Plain text
               2. Microsoft Word
               3. Microsoft RTF
               4. Adobe Postscript
               5. Adobe PDF

Abstracts in formats other than plain text should be sent as an 
attachment to your e-mail. PostScript and PDF files should have all fonts 
embedded. All other formats, please include any non-standard fonts that 
you use (including all phonetic and symbolic fonts). If you send your 
abstract in any format other than plain text, please allow for time to 
solve any technical difficulties that may arise.

++PROGRAMME:

Talks will be 25 minutes long, with 15 minutes for discussion. A very 
limited number of slots will be reserved for longer talks (45 minutes 
plus 15 minutes discussion); those are intended for presentations of 
broader scope.

++SYMPOSIUM FEES:

So far, EAJS and Lahti Centre made a decision on the participation fees 
as follows (depending on the time of registration):

Normal fee: 110 / 145 / 175 EURO
EAJS-member fee: 80 / 100 / 120 EURO
Student fee: 45 /55 / 65 EURO

1 EURO is now equivalent to about 1.17 US dollars.
